Our water supplies are near empty and we still have 5 days until we get through the desert. The devil's flat has an appropriate name. All there was was sand; as far as the eye could see. touching the scorched sand burnt any bare skin, and dry waterholes are plentiful. We also have many of our livestock dieing. The only way to get through it is to tough it out and depend mostly on luck and knowledge. We can travel during the early morning to escape the heat of the day. The Oregon trail has brought much misery, but it will soon be less. Oregon city is almost near.
